Definition#

ADS-B stands for Automatic Dependent Surveillance–Broadcast. Aircraft equipped with ADS-B Out continuously broadcast their GPS-derived position, altitude, ground speed, and identification. ADS-B In allows aircraft to receive traffic and weather data.

Why It Matters Operationally#

ADS-B provides more accurate position data than radar, works in areas without radar coverage (oceanic, remote), and enables tighter separation standards. It is mandatory in many airspaces worldwide (FAA required ADS-B Out since January 2020).
