Definition#

Controlled airspace encompasses airspace classes where air traffic control services are provided and certain requirements apply. In the U.S., this includes Classes A (above FL180), B (major airports), C (busy airports), D (towered airports), and E (general controlled).

Why It Matters Operationally#

Different classes have different entry requirements (clearance, communication, equipment). Understanding airspace is fundamental to piloting and determines when ATC contact, IFR filing, and transponder use are required.
