Definition#
A waypoint is a specified geographic location used for air navigation. Waypoints can be named (5-letter ICAO identifiers like RNAV fixes) or defined by latitude/longitude coordinates.
Why It Matters Operationally#
Waypoints define airways, departure procedures (SIDs), arrival procedures (STARs), and approach procedures. FMS-equipped aircraft navigate from waypoint to waypoint using RNAV/GPS.
