1. Introduction#
This Cookie Policy explains how Aviatopia ("we", "our", "us") uses cookies and similar technologies when you visit https://aviatopia.com (the "Website").
It should be read alongside our Privacy Policy, which describes how we collect and use personal information more broadly.
2. What Are Cookies?#
Cookies are small text files stored on your device when you visit a website. They help sites remember settings, keep you signed in, and understand how pages are used.
We also use local storage, a similar browser technology that stores data on your device without sending it on every request. Where relevant, this policy covers both cookies and local storage.
3. How We Use Cookies#
Aviatopia groups cookies into categories. Some are required for the site to work. Others are optional and load only with your consent.
| Category | Purpose | Consent required |
|---|---|---|
| Strictly necessary | Core site functionality, security, and consent storage | No |
| Analytics | Optional product analytics (PostHog) | Yes |
| Preferences | Theme and language settings (when enabled) | Yes |
Our primary traffic measurement uses self-hosted Umami and Vercel Web Analytics, which do not set analytics cookies for standard page measurement. See Section 6 for details.
4. Strictly Necessary Cookies#
These cookies are essential for the Website to function. They cannot be disabled through our cookie banner.
| Cookie name | Provider | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
cc_cookie | Aviatopia (CookieConsent) | Stores your cookie consent choices | Up to 12 months |
atlas_session | Aviatopia | Encrypted session for signed-in users (httpOnly) | Session or up to 30 days |
atlas_oauth_tmp | Aviatopia | Temporary OAuth state during sign-in (httpOnly) | 5 minutes |
The atlas_session and atlas_oauth_tmp cookies are set only when you use Google sign-in. They are encrypted, httpOnly, and never accessible to page scripts.
5. Analytics Cookies (Consent Required)#
If you accept the Analytics category in our cookie banner and PostHog is enabled, PostHog may set cookies and use local storage to measure product usage.
| Cookie / storage | Provider | Purpose | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|
ph_* cookies | PostHog | Distinct visitor identification and session continuity | Up to 1 year |
| PostHog local storage | PostHog | Event buffering and client state | Until cleared |
PostHog loads only after you grant analytics consent. If you reject analytics cookies, PostHog runs in memory-only mode and does not persist identifiers.
We do not use Google Analytics or other Google advertising cookies.
6. Analytics Without Cookies#
Aviatopia measures aggregated traffic using tools that do not rely on analytics cookies:
Self-hosted Umami#
Umami collects page views and custom interaction events without setting analytics cookies, session replay, heatmaps, or persistent user identifiers. Data is stored on infrastructure controlled by Aviatopia.
Vercel Web Analytics#
During a comparison period, Vercel Web Analytics provides cookie-free, aggregated usage measurement on the same origin. No third-party analytics cookies are set.
Neither Umami nor Vercel Web Analytics require consent for standard page measurement because they do not use identifying cookies.
7. Similar Technologies (Local Storage)#
Some preferences are stored in your browser's local storage rather than cookies:
| Key | Purpose | Category |
|---|---|---|
theme-preference | Remembers light, dark, or system theme | Functional (no cookie set) |
Theme preference is applied before the page renders to avoid a flash of the wrong theme. It is not shared with third parties.
8. Third-Party Cookies on Forms#
When you submit the Contact or Suggest an Edit forms, Cloudflare Turnstile may set cookies to verify that the submission is from a human and not automated abuse. These cookies are set by Cloudflare and are subject to Cloudflare's privacy policy.
Turnstile loads only on pages that include the verification widget.
9. Marketing Cookies#
Aviatopia does not currently use marketing or advertising cookies (such as Google Ads or Meta Pixel). If this changes, we will update this policy and ask for consent before loading those services.
10. Managing Your Preferences#
You can change your cookie choices at any time:
- Click Cookie preferences in the site footer
- Use the Manage preferences button in the cookie banner
When you withdraw consent for a category, we stop loading the related optional services and clear associated cookies where technically possible.
You can also control cookies through your browser settings. Most browsers let you block or delete cookies. Blocking strictly necessary cookies may prevent parts of the Website from working, including sign-in.
11. Changes to This Cookie Policy#
We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time. Updates will be reflected by revising the "Last updated" date at the top of this page.
Continued use of the Website after changes indicates acceptance of the updated policy.
