Definition#

ETOPS (Extended-range Twin-engine Operational Performance Standards, colloquially "Engines Turn Or Passengers Swim") certifies twin-engine aircraft to operate on routes that take them more than 60 minutes from a suitable diversion airport.

Why It Matters Operationally#

ETOPS certification (e.g., ETOPS-180, ETOPS-370) enables twin-engine jets to fly transoceanic routes previously restricted to three- or four-engine aircraft. It requires enhanced maintenance, reliability tracking, and fuel reserve planning.
