Definition#

A turbofan is a type of jet engine that features a large ducted fan in front of the gas generator core. Most of the thrust comes from the bypass airflow moved by the fan rather than from the core exhaust.

Why It Matters Operationally#

Turbofans dominate commercial aviation because of their superior fuel efficiency, lower noise, and better performance at subsonic speeds compared to turbojets. The bypass ratio is a key performance indicator.
