Definition#

Lift coefficient (CL) is a dimensionless coefficient that relates the lift generated by an airfoil to the air density, airspeed, and wing area. It varies with angle of attack and airfoil shape.

Why It Matters Operationally#

CL is central to the lift equation: L = ½ρv²SCL. Pilots indirectly manage CL through angle of attack and configuration (flaps). CL reaches its maximum value just before the stall.
