Definition#

A turboprop is a gas turbine engine in which the majority of energy from the exhaust is extracted by a turbine to drive a propeller through a reduction gearbox. A small amount of residual thrust is produced by the exhaust.

Why It Matters Operationally#

Turboprops are highly fuel-efficient at speeds below approximately 400 knots and altitudes below 25,000 feet, making them ideal for regional routes and short-field operations.
