Definition#

A missed approach (also called a go-around) is the procedure executed when an instrument approach cannot be completed to a landing. The pilot initiates a climb following a published procedure that includes altitude, heading, and routing to a hold or new approach.

Why It Matters Operationally#

Missed approaches consume fuel, delay arrivals, and increase ATC workload. They are a normal operational procedure, not an emergency. Fuel planning must always account for at least one missed approach.
