Definition#

Decision height (DH) (or decision altitude, DA) is the height above the runway at which the pilot must have sufficient visual reference to the runway environment to continue the approach, or else execute a missed approach.

Why It Matters Operationally#

Lower DH means more capability to land in poor visibility but requires more advanced equipment (ILS category) and crew qualification. CAT I has a DH of 200 ft; CAT II has 100 ft; CAT III may have no DH.
