Definition#

RVR stands for Runway Visual Range. It is the distance over which a pilot on the centerline of a runway can see the runway surface markings or lights, as measured by transmissometers or forward scatter meters placed alongside the runway.

Why It Matters Operationally#

RVR is the definitive measure for determining whether an approach can be initiated and continued to landing under IFR. Different approach categories (CAT I, II, III) have specific RVR minimums.
