Definition#

OVC (Overcast) is a sky condition in METARs and TAFs indicating that 8/8 (all) of the sky is obscured by cloud. An overcast layer always constitutes a ceiling.

Why It Matters Operationally#

An OVC layer at low altitude greatly restricts visual operations and requires IFR procedures. Combined with low visibility, OVC conditions may require CAT II or CAT III ILS approaches.
