Definition#

A slat is a movable panel on the leading edge of the wing that deploys forward and downward to create a slot, re-energizing airflow over the upper wing surface and increasing the critical angle of attack.

Why It Matters Operationally#

Slats delay the stall to higher angles of attack, effectively lowering stall speed. They are typically deployed in combination with flaps for takeoff and landing.
