Definition#

A spoiler is a hinged panel on the upper surface of the wing that, when raised, disrupts the smooth airflow over the wing. This reduces lift ("spoils" it) and increases drag.

Why It Matters Operationally#

In flight, spoilers assist descent without increasing speed. On the ground (ground spoilers/speed brakes), they dump lift to put weight on the wheels for braking. Some aircraft use asymmetric spoiler deployment as roll augmentation.
