Definition#

An updraft is a current of rising air caused by surface heating, frontal lifting, orographic lifting, or convergence. Updrafts are the engine that drives cumulus cloud growth and thunderstorm development.

Why It Matters Operationally#

Strong updrafts inside thunderstorms can exceed 6,000 ft/min, making the interior of CBs extremely hazardous. Moderate updrafts cause positive G-loads and altitude gains during cruise.
