Definition#

A downdraft is a localized column of sinking air, typically associated with thunderstorms, rain shafts, or mountain waves. Downdraft velocities can exceed 2,000–3,000 ft/min in mature thunderstorms.

Why It Matters Operationally#

Downdrafts cause sudden altitude loss and performance degradation. Near the ground, they are especially dangerous during approach and takeoff. Microbursts are an extreme form of downdraft.
