Definition#

A microburst is a small-scale, intense downdraft that, upon reaching the surface, produces damaging divergent winds lasting 5 to 15 minutes. It can be wet (with precipitation) or dry.

Why It Matters Operationally#

Microbursts create rapid performance-changing wind shear. An aircraft on approach may first encounter a headwind (increasing performance) followed by a downdraft and tailwind (rapidly decreasing performance), potentially leading to ground contact.
