L/D Max

L/D Max is the airspeed where an aircraft produces the greatest lift-to-drag ratio, generating the most lift with the least drag. This speed represents the lowest possible total drag and defines best glide speed in engine failure scenarios.

L/D Max (pronounced "L over D max") is the airspeed where a wing produces the greatest ratio of lift to drag. At this speed, the aircraft generates the most lift for the least drag, making total drag as low as it can be.

How It Works#

Every aircraft produces two types of drag. Induced drag comes from generating lift and decreases as speed increases. Parasite drag comes from the airframe pushing through air and increases as speed increases. Total drag is the sum of both.

At low speeds, induced drag dominates. At high speeds, parasite drag dominates. Between these extremes, there is one speed where the two are equal and their combined total is at its lowest. That point is L/D Max.

The lift-to-drag ratio is written as L/DL/D. At L/D Max, this ratio reaches its peak value. For a typical light trainer, L/D Max falls around 1.3 times the clean stall speed, often somewhere between 65 and 80 knots indicated airspeed (KIAS).

A Cessna 172 loses its engine at 6,000 feet above ground level (AGL). The pilot pitches to best glide speed, which is 68 KIAS for that aircraft. This speed is the 172's L/D Max. Flying at this speed stretches the glide as far as possible, giving the pilot the most ground distance covered per foot of altitude lost.
