Airspeed is the speed of an aircraft relative to the surrounding air mass. It is the primary speed reference pilots use to fly, navigate, and maintain control.
How It Works#
Unlike ground speed, airspeed does not measure how fast an aircraft moves over the ground. It measures the aircraft's speed through the air itself. This distinction matters because lift and drag depend on airspeed, not ground speed.
A pitot-static system measures airspeed. The pitot tube faces forward and captures ram air pressure. The static port captures still (ambient) air pressure. The airspeed indicator compares the two and displays the result.
Pilots work with four main types of airspeed:
- IAS (Indicated Airspeed): The raw reading from the airspeed indicator.
- CAS (Calibrated Airspeed): IAS corrected for instrument and position errors.
- TAS (True Airspeed): CAS corrected for altitude and air density. This is your actual speed through the air.
- GS (Ground Speed): TAS adjusted for wind. This is used for navigation and flight planning, not aircraft performance.
At sea level on a standard day, IAS and TAS are nearly equal. At higher altitudes, where the air is thinner, TAS will be significantly higher than IAS.

A student pilot flying a Cessna 172 climbs to 8,000 feet. The airspeed indicator shows 100 knots IAS. After correcting for altitude and temperature, the true airspeed works out to roughly 116 knots TAS. The aircraft is moving through the air faster than the gauge suggests because the air is less dense at altitude.
The pilot checks the weather and finds a 20-knot headwind. Ground speed drops to about 96 knots. The aircraft's performance, including stall speed and lift, still depends on the 100-knot IAS reading, not the ground speed.
Why It Matters#
Every critical aircraft performance number is expressed in airspeed. Stall speeds, approach speeds, never-exceed speeds, and rotation speeds are all IAS values. Fly below the minimum, and the wings stop producing lift. Fly above the maximum, and you risk structural damage.
Understanding the difference between IAS and TAS also helps pilots plan fuel burn, estimate arrival times, and make good decisions at altitude. A pilot who confuses the two can easily misjudge range or performance.
